Who are nerds, really? We are the innovators of our time. We are history's troublemakers. We are never satisfied and we will not be silenced.

We not only put computers into every home, but we made them cool. We put the world into constant communication. We are who Hollywood and TV fear, and long to appease. We take thousand year-old societal conventions and improve upon them.

Like, for instance, love.

Finding love for a single nerd can be messy, impractical and time consuming. Keeping love can be even harder. Especially when you're busy changing the world, like us. Naturally, a nerd saw dating as an imperfect social construct, and it took a nerd to improve upon it. Sure, internet personals were once considered a dungeon for the anti-social, and guess what? We made them something for everybody. Now, these new nerdified ideas are taking the next step in improving human relations.

BluePont Mobile: if you have a BlackBerry or an iPhone and a penchant for spontaneous mischief, this app might be for you. When you install BluePont Mobile onto your smartphone and create a profile, you tell BluePont who you're looking to meet. The app will alert you whenever someone who meets that criteria is in walking distance from you, sends their picture and details, and lets you text them directly. I downloaded this not long ago to test it out, and found it a quick and easy way to start up some goofy conversations. Like any other matching service, your experience will vary depending the users in your area. I found that affluent areas produced more results (more smartphones nearby), for instance, in Los Angeles, BluePont buzzed my BlackBerry most frequently in Santa Monica and Venice. While this probably won't find anyone true love, it's not a bad way to share random quips with total strangers, and the BluePont girl who kept me company while I was sick in bed was a sweetheart.

TwitterBirds: yes, every damn person you know is on Twitter right now (feel free to follow me, BTW), which means that a lot of people our age are shooting themselves up with the latest digital heroin. But other than the celebrities who twitter and all our friends, the site isn't designed to be a conduit for dating. The recently launched TwitterBirds.com changes that. At first glance, it is just a dating site, although rather than charge a fee to post a profile and regulate communication, the site posts links to the subject's Twitter profile, enabling you to follow them and profess your love in 140 characters or less.

WingWomen: this one's for all you Y-chromosome lurkers out there, or any assertive NerdGirls looking for a job. Internet dating most likely began because approaching someone you're attracted to and starting an unsolicited conversation is a scary thing. For guys, having a wing-man on your approach may help prove that you're likable enough to have friends and give you someone to riff off of, but they can also be an unwelcome witness to your crash and burn. And really, ladies, are two douchebags with popped collars and vert stripes any more trustworthy than one? So, how does a guy at a bar make himself seem more approachable and viable? WingWomen recently opened in New York and Las Vegas to help with that. For $75/hour, one of their black-heeled matchmakers (matchmakress?) will accompany you to a nightspot, and then work the crowd to help facilitate non-threatening introductions with any girl you want, and if you got your money's worth, she'll disappear discreetly when the time is right.

Why Was I Dissed?: ever been ditched and didn't know why? Too embarrassed to ask him/her yourself? Wonder no more! The people at whywasidissed.com are here to do the investigating for you. After filling out a small questionnaire, they will contact your crush for you via e-mail and coax them into spilling the truth about why you were left hanging. They'll reach out to them for free, and if the object of your unrequited affection responds, they'll share with you what may be some hard truth, but will hopefully provide some closure and let you get on with your life.

New innovations are popping up all the time (guys might appreciate PMSBuddy.com, for scheduled e-mail reminders letting you know next week is NOT the time to push her buttons) from nerds like you, or nerds like me, who never stop asking why or why not. Who knows what we'll start next?
